Paneltech Industries partnered with main contractor Beardwell Construction to manufacture and install a striking collection of architectural joinery for the Grade II listed Philips Building at SOAS University, London. Overseen by overall project architects FJC Studio and working to the meticulous interior details of Story Design (Kenton Simons), the high-profile reading room refurbishment required a sensitive design language capable of softening Sir Denys Lasdun’s iconic 1973 brutalist concrete atrium while introducing flexible, modern study zones.
The centerpiece of the revitalised space is an expansive, central pill-shaped planter island. Paneltech precision-manufactured the large oval timber substructure, finishing it with meticulously fluted, sage-green upholstered panelling that anchors the open-plan floor directly beneath the library’s historic five-storey balconies.
To create focused workspaces, Paneltech delivered an array of custom study booths featuring neutral-toned acoustic seating complemented by walnut wall cladding and geometric open-lattice walnut privacy screens. Additionally, a bespoke vertical-slat walnut divider credenza was crafted to subtly partition the open-plan layout, integrating custom reading lights. This project perfectly highlights Paneltech’s ability to combine fine commercial upholstery and intricate hardwood joinery to elevate public educational spaces.
